Side Effects of Chlorella and Spirulina

Chlorella and Spirulina have many benefits but it is important to know the side effects from using this supplement. As it goes with any substance we ingest, we need to be aware of the research data and experiences from other consumers. Chlorella and Spirulina are safe supplements but some consumers have reported mild reactions that occurred, usually in the first few days of adding these supplements to their diet.

Some side effects include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Green colored stool
  • Muscle pain
  • Headaches
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Bloating

There is a high content of protein which may cause a low-grade fever in some people. This protein promotes the body’s natural metabolism which burns excessive fats. Most side effects occur when you first begin using Chlorella and Spirulina as a supplement because your body is becoming acclimated to it.

There are no documented reports of Chlorella or Spirulina interacting in a negative way with other foods or medications.

One of the great benefits of Chlorella is that it boosts the immune system, but if you have a condition such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus, Chlorella as a supplement would not be right for you. These conditions are auto-immune diseases and Chlorella could worsen your condition.

Before taking any drug or supplement, consult your physician if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Even though lab testing results show mercury levels are non-detectable, Chlorella can have a high content of mercury, and it isn’t advised for pregnant or breast-feeding women.

In a very few cases, consumers have reported an allergic reaction to Chlorella. The symptoms included breathing problems, chest tightness, hives, itching and/or a rash.

These are considered major side effects and you should consult a physician immediately.

If you are currently taking blood thinners, namely Coumadin, or its generic Warfarin, you should not take Chlorella. Chlorella may have high levels of Vitamin K which when combined with a blood thinner could affect blood clotting.

Side effects from Spirulina can range from flu-like gastrointestinal discomfort to serious complications of existing health problems. Even at lower doses, common Spirulina side effects might include fever, sweating, thirst, constipation, and gastrointestinal symptoms. The fever and sweating are the result of the body trying to burn up the extra protein in the supplement.

Since Spirulina is extremely high in nutritional content, it has the ability to not only nourish the body, but to cure disorders such as cancer, HIV, herpes, and allergies.

Again, if you have any doubts or questions, it is wise to consult your physician.
